New Changes to Motor Insurance: What You Need to Know
You may have read or heard in the news about new requirements for motor insurance in Ireland. From 31 March 2025, changes to the law mean that you’ll need to provide your driver number – and the driver numbers of anyone named on your policy – when buying or renewing your car insurance. These updates are part of the Road Traffic Act, designed to help the Gardaí detect uninsured drivers and make roads safer for everyone.
At RedClick, we’re here to help you navigate these changes quickly and easily. Here’s what you need to know:
Why is This Happening?
The new requirements aim to support the Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID), which helps Gardaí identify uninsured drivers in real time. By including driver numbers in the database, authorities can better enforce insurance laws and keep roads safer.
What Do I Need to Do?
To keep your policy valid, you’ll need to send us the driver number for every driver listed on your policy before your renewal date. The driver number is usually found under Section 4D on your Irish driving licence.
If you don’t provide this information, insurers won’t be able to issue or renew your policy, and any named drivers without a driver number will need to be removed.
How to Send Us Your Driver Number
New customers: We’ll simply ask you to provide the Driver Numbers of all drivers you wish to cover on your policy before buying the policy.

What If I Can’t Find My Driver Number?
For Irish driving numbers, the 9-digit Driver Number is located on the front of the driver’s license, under section 4d. If you’ve lost your licence, you can contact the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) for help. You’ll need to provide your driver number before the new law takes effect to avoid any gaps in your cover.
For non-Irish driving licenses, your Driver Number may appear in a different location. Different countries have different formats for their licenses and the legislation sets out that in the case of foreign licenses, “the Driver Number or unique identifier of any person to whom the license is issued” is required.
