Do I legally need home insurance in Ireland?

While home insurance is not legally mandatory in Ireland, most mortgage providers do require you to have at least buildings insurance in place, to protect their interest in your home and before releasing mortgage funds if you're buying a new home.

Do I need buildings and contents insurance? What’s the difference?

Great question! The difference between Building and Contents Insurance can be confusing, but it's actually very simple.

1. Buildings Insurance: Covers the cost of repairing or rebuilding the physical structure of your home if it is damaged by an insured event. This includes items such as the walls, roof, floors, windows, doors, and permanent fixtures (e.g., fitted kitchens, bathrooms).

2. Contents Insurance: is insurance for your personal belongings in your home. You don’t need to be a homeowner, either, as many renters choose to also take out Contents insurance to insure their personal belongings.

And no, you don't need both. You can purchase separate policies and they do not have to be purchased together.

Remember, It’s important that you accurately assess the value of your rebuilding costs and contents, otherwise you may end up being underinsured which could impact any claims you make.

Firstly you'll need to understand what is Underinsurance.

2.  Secondly check what your actual current home rebuild costs are.  If you have insured your policy for less than the current rebuild cost, then you must contact us to notify us of the correct value to insure your buildings for. This is to ensure we update your policy and that you're accurately covered.

It's also important to note that if you have completed any building extension work or renovations on your home, that you also notify us to ensure your policy is updated and that you're fully protected.

3.  Thirdly check the current value of your contents and if you have undervalued them or you need to specify any valuable item in particular, then you must contact us to update your policy to ensure you're accurately covered.

Please note It’s important that you accurately assess the value of your rebuilding costs and contents, otherwise you may end up being underinsured which could impact any claims you make.

Check out our blog explaining what is home Underinsurance.
